Today a part of the
BMW Group, Glas was once its own company and brand. The former Hans Glas GmbH was founded as a repair company for agricultural machines in Pilsting, in 1895, by Andreas Glas. The company opens a branch office in Dingolfing in 1905, and begins producing its first sowing machines.
Glas begins making scooters in July, 1951, and produces more than 45,000 until, in 1956, production stops to make way for the
Goggomobil line of sedans (1955-1969); coupés (1957-1969), and transporters (1957-1965).
In 1958, Glas launches the Isar; in 1962, the Type 04, and in 1964, the 1300 GT.
In late 1966, a few months after the launch of the Glas 2600 V8 (dubbed Glaserati), Glas becomes part of
BMW, who is looking for additional production capacity for its popular
1500 sedan.
Like several Glas cars, rebadged and briefly sold as BMWs, the Glaserati becomes the
BMW-GLAS 3000 GT. Munich closes and retools Glas GmbH in 1968.
Today, the Dingolfing facility produces
5 series;
6 series, and
7 series cars, and car bodies for
Rolls-Royce.
